Joe was born on January 30, 1937 at Selma, Alabama. He graduated from high school at Marion Military Institute, Marion, Alabama in 1955. He received the B.S. degree from Auburn University at Auburn, Alabama in 1960. He received the M.A. degree from Duquesne University at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1969. He is a graduate of the Army Command and General Staff College and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. Joe earned his commission as a Distinguished Military Graduate from the Auburn University ROTC program in 1960. He served a series of assignments in the U.S., Germany, and two tours in Vietnam. After retirement from the U.S. Army as a Lt. Colonel, he worked for the U.S. Treasury Dept. and subsequently retired from Civil Service. Joe’s Masonic career has been extensive and continuous since he was raised to Master Mason in 1965. In the Blue Lodge, Joe has served in most offices. He was Master of Rosemead Lodge #457 in Rosemead, California in 2001. He is a 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason and was Wise Master in the Rose Croix. Joe is currently the Right Illustrious Deputy Grand Master in the Grand York Rite Council. He was selected for membership in the York Rite College, and chosen to be a member of the Allied Masonic Degrees and he is currently serving as Sovereign Master. Joe joined the Temple City High Twelve Club in 1984 and served as president in 1989. Since 1991 he has been the treasurer of the National Masonic Postal Chess Club. Joe has been a Shriner since 1972 and is a member of Al Malaikah Shrine Temple in Los Angeles where he is president of a Mini-Car parade unit. He is a member of the Royal Order of Scotland and The Robert The Bruce Association. Joe is a Past Associate Bethel Guardian of Job’s Daughter Bethel No.143. He received the DeMolay Legion of Honor. He is currently the Steward in the Knight Masons. Joe is a Past National President of National Sojourners. Since 2002 he has been a member of The Red Cross of Constantine. He is a member of KYCH in the York Rite. Joe and his wife, Katie, have been married 42 years. They have one daughter who has given them three grandchildren. Katie Ryland is a Past Bethel Guardian of Job’s Daughter Bethel No. 29 and Bethel No. 179 and has served as a Deputy Grand Guardian for California. She is a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, and the Social Order of the Beauceant.
